In the world of special education, direct support often comes through paraprofessionals, also called educational assistants (EAs), or simply “paras”. Paras help students with disabilities access various parts of the school environment through instructional, behavioral and personal support. Para support makes a world of difference to the student and the school environment as a whole. Although this staff is essential to creating an inclusive classroom, these individuals have long been under-prepared for such an important role.

Paraprofessionals are integral to the educational success of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Paraprofessionals are integral to the educational success of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

To help better prepare these individuals, the Paraprofessional Resource and Research Center, or PAR2A, has developed training and supervision systems for paraprofessionals. The organization is based out of the University of Colorado Denver, and their goal is to support schools around the country by providing resources for paraprofessionals. Their years of research back what parents already know: paras can make or break a school year!

The PAR2A website is rich with resources and opportunities, including the CO-TOP Model curriculum for improving and retaining paraprofessionals. It offers practical applications that paras can use daily as well as long-term goal setting in a para’s career. The “program and events” tab lists conferences and trainings so that paras can understand their importance in the school setting while supporting their students’ specific needs.

Paras and EAs are a vitally important resource for thriving students. If you are a para, or know someone who would like more training, visit the PAR2A website and dive into the valuable material listed. If you have questions about becoming a para, supporting paras in schools, or your own student’s classroom aide, email Hannah at hannah@thearcppr.org or Connie at connie@thearcppr.org.
