As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, The Arc Pikes Peak Region is proud to shine a spotlight on one of our most dedicated and inspiring leaders: Mitch Routon, who was honored with the 2024 President’s Award by The Arc of the United States. This prestigious national recognition is awarded to individuals who go above and beyond to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and to support their full inclusion in all aspects of community life.

Mitch’s journey as a self-advocate began in 2007, when he joined the Board of Directors at The Arc Pikes Peak Region. Reflecting on those early days, Mitch shared, “When I started this journey in 2007 on the Board of The Arc Pikes Peak Region, I never thought I’d ever end up on the National Board of Directors.” His path has taken him from local leadership to statewide and national influence, including service as the Board President of The Arc of Colorado and as a member of The Arc of the United States Board of Directors.

At the 2024 Arc National Convention, Mitch became the first self-advocate ever to receive the President’s Award, a milestone that marks both personal achievement and progress in our broader movement. “It’s an honor to have been the first Self-Advocate who received the President’s Award,” he said. “I’ve worked so hard and put my dedication into the job.”

Mitch’s commitment to advocacy is as personal as it is powerful. He has spent nearly two decades fighting for systemic change. Not only does he speak up for his own rights, but he encourages others in the IDD community to raise their voices as well. His leadership style is grounded in the belief that progress is collective, not individual.

This sense of unity is especially resonant during Disability Pride Month. “We, people with IDD, always unite and fight for the rights we have,” Mitch said, underscoring the strength of a community that continues to push for dignity, visibility, and justice.

Mitch doesn’t just advocate for today—he advocates for tomorrow. His vision is a more inclusive future, one where every person with IDD can thrive. Through his relentless dedication, he’s helping to build that future, one courageous step at a time.
