Arthur’s journey is a true testament to the power of self-advocacy and resilience! 🌟
Arthur recently moved into his own apartment, navigating the complex process without transitional help. He made countless calls, coordinated all the logistics, and even changed his addresses and set up future medical services all by himself.
Arthur, diagnosed incorrectly with schizophrenia, advocated for himself to qualify for Medicaid. His strength and persistence paid off, and today he relies on Medicaid and SSI to support his independent living. With a Section 8 voucher, he found a way to make ends meet.
A significant change in faith ignited Arthur’s self-advocacy journey. He became involved with The Arc Pikes Peak Region in 2009, joining Include USA to amplify voices from the IDD community. Now, as a Board of Directors member, Arthur helps drive our mission forward.
Arthur is a loving husband, a generous reader, and a passionate learner. His favorite subjects include American West history, physics, geometry, and archaeology. He is always eager to contribute to conversations and fight for justice for people with IDD.
This fall, Arthur is planning a road trip to Montana and Wyoming, a dream delayed by the pandemic but never forgotten. His story is an inspiring reminder that with persistence and support, incredible things are possible.
To anyone with IDD looking to become a self-advocate, Arthur’s advice is simple: advocate and agitate for what you need. Be persistent.
Arthur, thank you for showing us the true meaning of self-determination and for putting the heart into our mission. ❤️ #SelfAdvocacy #Inclusion #TheArcPPR
