Ortensia’s journey as a single mother raising her son, Jesus, who has multiple disabilities, has been marked by many challenges. However, her story is also one of hope and resilience, largely thanks to the unwavering support of The Arc Pikes Peak Region (The Arc-PPR).

Her connection with The Arc-PPR began unexpectedly during a visit to the Children’s Hospital, where a navigator put her in touch with Laura, an advocate from The Arc-PPR. From the moment Laura entered their lives, she became a crucial source of support, helping Ortensia navigate the complexities of caring for Jesus. Financial difficulties had taken a toll on their lives, especially after Ortensia lost SSI benefits in 2021. Despite these struggles, Laura’s guidance provided a lifeline, offering resources and inviting Ortensia to events that kept her connected and informed.

One of the significant milestones facilitated by The Arc-PPR was securing a metro bus pass for Jesus, a step towards his independence as he nears adulthood. This achievement, along with ongoing support, has helped Ortensia move forward, even when the process seemed overwhelming. She credits The Arc and Laura for pushing her to keep taking the next steps, whether it’s attending crucial evaluations or connecting with state resources.

Ortensia is deeply grateful for the team that The Arc-PPR has helped assemble around her—doctors, therapists, and counselors who have become like family. They work together to manage Jesus’s complex medical needs, from epilepsy to visual impairments. This network of support has been essential in helping her navigate the daily challenges of raising a child with varying abilities.

Through it all, Ortensia remains determined to be a beacon of hope for other mothers in similar situations. She emphasizes the importance of seeking help and staying connected with resources like The Arc-PPR, which has been instrumental in providing the foundation for her and Jesus to keep moving forward. Ortensia’s story is a testament to the power of community and the difference that organizations like The Arc Pikes Peak Region can make in the lives of families facing extraordinary challenges.
